What wire rod is used for

Wire rod is the first product after the billet is hot-rolled into long, round, coiled bar. Most of it goes to wire drawers, who pull it down to finer diameters. Buyers are typically:

  • Wire drawing plants: binding wire, galvanized wire, black annealed wire.
  • Nail factories: common nails, roofing nails and concrete nails (usually from 5.5–6.5 mm SAE1008).
  • Mesh and fence makers: welded mesh, BRC mesh, chain-link and barbed wire.
  • Construction: 6.5 mm and 8 mm rod straightened and cut on site for stirrups, ties and light reinforcement.

Grades

GradeCarbon (%)Best for
SAE1006≤ 0.08Very fine drawing, soft annealed wire
SAE1008≤ 0.10General wire drawing, nails, galvanized wire
Q1950.06 – 0.12Binding wire, nails, mesh (Chinese standard)
Q2350.14 – 0.22Construction rod, stronger mesh
SAE1018 / 10220.15 – 0.23Cold heading, fasteners

For drawing plants, the important numbers are low and consistent carbon, tensile strength (SAE1008 is typically 330–420 MPa), and low scale so the rod draws cleanly. We send mill certificates with chemistry and tensile results for every heat.

Sizes and coils

  • Diameter: 5.5, 6.0, 6.5, 7.0, 8.0, 9.0, 10, 12, 14 and 16 mm.
  • Coil weight: about 1.8–2.2 tons per coil, compacted and tied with 4–6 steel bands.
  • Galvanized rod and drawn wire in 1–16 mm, for customers who want a finished zinc-coated product rather than raw rod.

Shipping

Wire rod ships in bulk vessels for large orders, or in 20ft containers (about 25–27 tons, 12–13 coils) for importers who need smaller lots. Popular destinations include Lagos, Tema, Abidjan, Mombasa, Dar es Salaam, Djibouti, Jebel Ali, Chittagong, Yangon and Manila. Tell us the grade, size, quantity and port, and we will quote CFR or CIF.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between SAE1008 and Q195 wire rod?

They are very similar low-carbon grades. SAE1008 is the American designation and Q195 the Chinese one, and both are used for wire drawing and nails. SAE1008 is often specified by buyers who need tighter chemistry control.

How many coils of wire rod fit in a 20ft container?

Usually 12–13 coils, about 25–27 tons, within the container's weight limit.

Can wire rod be used as reinforcement?

Plain 6.5–8 mm rod is often used for stirrups and ties. For main structural reinforcement, use ribbed rebar (for example HRB400 or B500B) as your design code requires.
